SUMMARY

I hold a PhD in Plant Taxonomy and Economic Botany from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, MSc in Plant Taxonomy and Economic Botany, and BSc. in Biology (Botany/Zoology) from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. My area of research interest is in Taxonomy and systematics of tropical plants, Biodiversity and Ecosystem conservation for livelihood improvement, Socio-economic studies of useful plant species and other under-utilized crop species, and Bioactivity studies of medicinal plants and other bioactive metabolites. I have a wide experience in supervising and mentoring postgraduate students, whereby I have managed to supervise to completion 10 of them (9 MSc and 1 PhD), while 4 others (3 PhDs and 1 MSc) are ongoing. I have so far published 29 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, 3 book chapter contributions, and several papers in conference proceedings. I have also served as a peer reviewer of several scientific papers. I have so far externally examined 9 MSc and PhD theses from different universities, and several internal ones. I am currently serving as an external examiner for examinations and grades moderation in two universities. With local and international institutional collaborations, I have competitively won 9 research grants to undertake scientific research on various topical issues. Cumulatively, I have 10 years and 5 months of university management in various administrative positions including eight (8) years as South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) Wote campus director, 8 months as Associate Dean of students, one (1) year as Dean of school (Faculty), and 9 months as chairman of department. I have served in several university appointed committees including Chairman, South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) Wote campus Contract Implementation Committee for the construction of the campus, Conference planning committees, Students welfare committee, procurement committee, and Research and Training committee among others. I have also participated in several national and international academic training workshops and scientific conferences. I have also undertaken several professional consultancies at local and national levels. I am a registered National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) lead expert capable of undertaking Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA/EIA). I am also involved in various community service engagements including serving in primary and secondary school Boards of Management amongst other community services. I am currently a member of six professional associations.
