WORK EXPERIENCE

Joined Egerton university i August 1992 and have been HOD External Studies and Media Department w.e.f 31st Jan., 2003 – 2015. This department ran the Applied Computer Science program, of the Royal Melbourne University (RMIT) (formerly administered in collaboration with the African Virtual University (AVU). The department’s role was the recruitment of students, managing the teaching and learning through timetabling, recruitment of part-time teaching staff, managing examinations, ensuring fees collection, and dealing with day to day issues raised by students and staff, etc. The program graduated two cohorts of diploma students and one of a degree in Information Technology of RMIT. It ended in 2007.

The department also managed the Unisa distance learning program. Under a memorandum of understanding between º£½ÇÆƽâ°æand University of South Africa, the department advertised, recruited students into the various Unisa distance learning programs, recruited tutors and managed the tutorials for the students, invigilated exams and collected fees on behalf of Unisa. The collaboration with Unisa ended in 2011.

 The department now runs the collaboration between º£½ÇÆƽâ°æand Open University of Tanzania in distance education.

Other University responsibilities undertaken variously:

  • Chairman, º£½ÇÆƽâ°æICT Management Committee -2006 – 2011. This committee advises university management on the implementation of ICT. It strategises on, advises on, coordinates and supervises the implementation of the university’s strategic objectives on ICT. With ICT being such a strategic teaching, learning and management resource, this is a key committee for the university, managing a huge financial budget. The ICT committee has developed Egerton University’s ICT Strategic Plan, the ICT Policy and Bandwidth Management Policy as well created faculty student ICT centres.
  • Chairman of Egerton University’s Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) Strategic Challenge Area of Improving University Integrated E-Based Management System. This team is involved in computerising key aspects of the university such as library, procurement, finance, personnel and expanding internet connectivity etc.
  • Member of the steering committee for the Launching Conference of the African Council for Distance Education held in Egerton University from Jan. 22nd -24th, 2005. This culminated into the formation of ADCE, a Pan- African body on distance learning.
  • Appointed member of a Vice Chancellor’s committee on the future of AVU at Egerton University- 2005.
  • Appointed member of a Vice Chancellor’s committee on development of curriculum for diploma and degrees in education through distance learning. This culminated into the university’s currently very successful School-based Teacher Education Program and establishment of the College of Open and Distance Learning (CODL) of Egerton University.– 2001
  • Member of a two people committee mandated to develop a tool for evaluating teaching effectiveness at º£½ÇÆƽâ°æ– 2000.
