Problem-based Learning (PBL) Teacher Manual Launched
AgriSCALE, a collaborative initiative involving six African and three European Higher
Education Institutions (HEIs), recently organized a workshop at Egerton University. The focus of
the workshop was on Competence-Based Curricula retooling and Adoption, and it marked the
launch of the PBL Teacher Manual.
The PBL manual gives an overview of the procedure of the step-by-step approach. It also
introduces skills that are required to perform the role of teacher. This manual can be used as a
starting point for practice with the step-by-step approach and the different roles in the tutorial
group.
The PBL manual shows step-by-step approaches that enable students to solve real-life business
challenges in multinational teams and find new sustainable business opportunities. As a result, a
new network-based learning ecosystem will be created by partner higher education institutions,
the industrial sector, and societal partners for the continuous development of education even after
the project's lifetime.
For educators in Kenya, the implications are profound. The PBL Manual emphasizes the
fundamental principle of competence, incorporating knowing, doing, and being. While the
knowledge component is straightforward, the skills development and attitude (being) domains
pose challenges. The manual addresses this by providing insights into the theoretical background
of PBL, facilitating a holistic understanding.
The launch of the PBL Teacher Manual on 1 st December was officiated by Deputy Vice-
Chancellor (Academics, Research & Extension) Prof. Bernard Aduda, present were Prof.
Patience Mshenga (Dean, Faculty of Agriculture and AgriSCALE Project Lead) and Prof.
Mwanarusi Saidi (Registrar Academic Affairs) and Gulu University (Uganda) Deputy Vice-
Chancellor (Academic Affairs) Prof. David Owiny.
