SUMMARY

Bernard O. C. Aduda is a Professor of Physics of Materials, University of Nairobi since 2005. He holds a PhD in Materials Science from Imperial College London, University of London (UK) (1991), and a Diploma of Imperial College (DIC), MSc Physics (University of Nairobi), B Ed (University of Nairobi).

He has had post-doctoral trainings at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) as an Associate (1993 -1995; 1999), Uppsala University (International Science Program (ISP) Fellowship (1999)), Imperial College (Commonwealth Scholarship Fellowship – (2002 – 2003)), and Princeton University (America Science Foundation - 2007).

He has served as a Member of Council of the Kenya Polytechnic University College (2009 – 2013); a member of Council of the National Council for Science and Technology (NCST) (2010 - 2013); Honorary Treasurer of the Network of the African Academy of Sciences (NASAC) (2013 -2019); Fellow of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences (KNAS) and Editor-in-Chief (2011 - ) and thus has chaired many committees, and edited the KNAS publications (journals, conference proceedings and other popular publications. He has also been a resource person (evaluator of programmes) for the Commission for University Education (CUE). Besides, he has served as an external examiner in several local and regional universities.

Prof. Aduda is currently (February 2022) serving as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Academic Affairs of Egerton University. Before his current assignment, he has held senior administrative positions at the University of Nairobi: Principal College of Biological and Physical Sciences and member of the University Executive Board (2011 – February 2021), Associate Dean, Kenya Science Campus (2007 – 2011), and Chairman, Department of Physics (2003 - 2007).

He is a founder member and served (2018 - 2020) as the Chief Coordinator of MSSEESA - a regional Eastern and Southern Africa Network for Scientists working on Materials Science and Solar Energy. he has contributed and significantly influenced the postgraduate Physics syllabi offered in the Network participating Universities – Dar es Salaam, Makerere, University of Nairobi and University of Zambia) and training of postgraduate students and technologists.

As an academic, has supervised to completion 10 PhD and 17 MSc students and has published 63 papers in peer reviewed journals besides making over 40 presentations in and organizing many learned international and local conferences, edited one book, and published two monographs (modules) used in teaching undergraduate Physics units. He reviews for a number of international journals.

Professor Aduda has networked widely - internationally, regionally and locally. He has attracted research funding of over KSh. 220 million used to buy state-of-the-art research equipment alongside fellowships for staff (8) fellowships/partial financial for postgraduate (MSc/PhD) students (>15) in the Department of Physics of the University of Nairobi where as a Professor he led a very active research Group and the resources (personnel and infrastructure capacity) he nurtured and sourced formed the foundation of the Solar Academy training programme (on the sizing, installation and maintenance of Photovoltaic (PV) systems in Kenya) started in 2012 that has trained over 500 hundred PV technologists and raised about KSh. 22 million, in the last ten years and installed in 2019 a 3kW grid-connected Solar Panels in the Department of Physics. He also initiated a number of research collaborations regionally and internationally that have benefitted both students and staff. The research Group he led was in 2019 competitively selected by the REGIONAL SCHOLARSHIP AND INNOVATION FUND (RSIF) UNDER THE PARTNERSHIP FOR SKILLS IN APPLIED SCIENCES, ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY (PASET) in 2019 to be a Center of Excellence in Energy to host annually the RSIF-PASET 11 PhD sponsored students from Africa.
