Shaping the Department of Agricultural Education and Extension (AGED):
As one of the founding staff members of the Department of Agricultural Education and Extension at Egerton University's Faculty of Education and Community Development Studies, Prof. Kathuri played a significant role in shaping the Department during its early years. Joining on May 19, 1972, he became the second African to hold this esteemed position. Prof. Kathuri's dedication, commitment, and hard work made him a highly valued member of the academic community and a reliable source of support and guidance.
A Champion of Education:
Beyond his contributions to the university, Prof. Kathuri was deeply passionate about education, particularly agricultural education. As one of the country's first trained agriculture teachers in the late 1960s, he collaborated with colleagues like Prof. Rose Mwonya and Prof. Louis Mumera to develop and enhance agricultural education in schools. His expertise and unwavering commitment paved the way for numerous students to pursue successful careers in agriculture. Serving as the AGED Chairman from 1990 to 1993 and as the acting Director at the Graduate School between 1995 and 1996, he played a pivotal role in shaping the academic direction of Egerton University. In 1997 he was appointed as acting Registrar, of Academic Affairs (R-AA) and on 4th December 2002 he was appointed as the substantive R-AA. He served together with the late Prof. Wilson Nguyo, among other founding senior administrators of Egerton University.

Prof. Kathuri's impact extended beyond academia; he inspired generations of students and faculty members to strive for greatness. With unwavering integrity and boundless enthusiasm, he encouraged intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and making a positive impact in their chosen fields. His strong Christian faith was evident through his genuine care for students, as he actively engaged with them on spiritual matters and served as a Patron of the Christian Union. Prof. Kathuri's friendly nature and value for relationships fostered a supportive and collaborative environment within the academic community. Later in life, he became an Anglican Church of Kenya Elder and Deacon, continuing his service to the community.
Lifelong Dedication to Alma Mater:
As an alumnus of Egerton University, Prof. Kathuri exemplified the lifelong connection and loyalty to his Alma Mater.
