In a step towards enhancing innovative agricultural practices and student training, º£½ÇÆƽâ°æwelcomed a delegation from the Arava International Centre for Agricultural Training (AICAT) on Monday, January 29, 2024. Led by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic, Research and Extension), Prof. Bernard O. Aduda, º£½ÇÆƽâ°æreceived the esteemed guests to discuss potential collaborations in the field of agriculture.
After meaningful discussions centered on advancing fish farming practices, the AICAT Team, alongside Prof. Nancy Mungai, Director of Research and Extension at Egerton University, posed for a group photo with engaged members of the Njoro Sub-County Fish Farmers Cooperative Society on January 29, 2024.
AICAT, renowned for its commitment to agricultural advancement, has an established Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Egerton University, focusing on cooperative efforts and student training in agriculture.
During the courtesy call, discussions focused on exploring avenues for affordable fish farming practices, aimed at assisting local farmers. Key areas of interest included access to quality fingerlings/seeds, affordable fish feeds, modern harvesting techniques, and efficient preservation and marketing strategies for fish products.
Highlighting the significance of the collaboration, Prof. Aduda underscored Egerton University's commitment to fostering agricultural innovation and addressing pertinent challenges faced by farmers. He commended the longstanding partnership with AICAT, which has contributed significantly to the institution's growth and expanded opportunities for students.
The visit included a tour of Egerton University's Agro-Science Park, showcasing practical applications of fish farming for educational purposes and community outreach. Prof. Nancy Mungai, the Director of Research and Extension, emphasized the need for accessible agricultural feeds to support farmers across various sectors.
Prof. Paul Kimurto elaborated on the challenges faced by fish farmers and discussed innovative solutions being implemented, such as demonstration units with open bonds and greenhouse technology. Prof. Kimurto is the Director of the Agro-Science Park and Innovation Centre as well as the Director of Marketing and Resource Mobilization.
